I work with code. I program stochastic algorithms that randomly choose branching paths of logic and/or values to generate unique, one-of-a-kind outputs. My practice centers on randomization as a core element of the creative process, where I work collaboratively with the systems I design. Through this iterative process, I explore the conceptual structures and rendering techniques of my work until an aesthetic emerges that resonates with me. The artworks I release are captured moments within this process — a final codebase that forms the foundation for curating pieces, offering works on-demand, or presenting them as part of an evolving system.
I have always been a keen observer of patterns, details, and behaviors. My mind is drawn to structure, and I find joy in distilling subjects into their root components, uncovering relationships between them in the process. When creating, I am unable to visualize literal outcomes; instead, my mind’s eye imagines abstract ideas and the influences they might have on one another. I work with code because it allows me to break these thoughts into discrete, actionable elements and introduce randomness to explore the latent domain space I’ve constructed. My goal is to uncover an aesthetic that best represents the underlying ideas, connecting them to various rendering techniques or other forms of presentation.
Each piece within a collection represents a unique but reproducible execution of a singular codebase capable of generating a near-infinite set of outcomes. Each artwork is created by providing the collection’s code with a seed—a unique string of text—that influences the randomization function. Using the same seed will always produce the same output, ensuring both a unique identity for an individual piece and a meaningful connection to the collection as a whole. Every artwork is, therefore, a representation of what is possible. My practice is a continued pursuit of a deeper understanding of stochastic processes and their relationship to the works I create.
